Boxer Superstores is a South African based limited-range discount supermarket, in the Food and Drug Retailing sector.
Established in April 1977, in KwaZulu-Natal, as KwaZulu Cash ‘n Carry, a conventional wholesaler, trading in essential commodities. In 1991, the business repositioned itself as a retail offering, renaming itself to Boxer Superstores. In 2002 it was acquired by Pick n Pay Stores Limited.
Located in urban, peri-urban and rural areas, targeting lower-to-middle income shoppers, Boxer’s primary interests when choosing store locale is the availability of high foot traffic – whether directly off the street, close to public transport hubs, as an anchor tenant within a shopping mall or as a standalone development.
The success of Boxer is its deep understanding of its shoppers, connection to the communities in which it trades, and its innovation in value-added services to meet its traditionally under-served customers’ needs.
Headed up by MD Marek Masojada, Boxer Superstores is a national brand with a portfolio of over 300 stores. Operating across three trading brands in Southern Africa (incl. two trading brands in Swaziland), and supplied through and supported by three distribution centres.
These trading brands offer a curated product range across grocery, fresh produce, general merchandise, liquor, and building material, whilst facilitating trading across the Socio-Economic Measure (SEM) 1 – 7 shopper profiles.
