As a result of speedy collaboration between key road freight industry players, 500kgs of rice was delivered last week to the remote area of Mbazwana in Kwazulu-Natal last week to feed the hungry.  The Road Freight Association (RFA) spearheaded an initiative to find a suitable recipient for rice from Thailand, which the Trucking Wellness Programme (TWP) had secured.

TWP, an initiative of the National Bargaining Council for the Road Freight and Logistics Industry (NBCRFLI), did not hesitate to offer one of its vehicles and drivers to make the delivery to Mbazwana. 

The rice was secured from Tzu Chi, Thailand.  Tzu Chi (meaning “compassionate relief”) is an international humanitarian organisation with an extensive network of volunteers and employees that has been awarded a special consultative status at the United Nations Economic and Social Council. 

“The rice was driven by the dearest gentleman called Colin Mkhari from Trucking Wellness and the NBCRFLI under the guidance of Tertius Wessels – another hero,” said Feed Rural KZN’s Tonya Khoury. “Colin arrived late at night and he was housed by a local man called Shadrack who opened his home to our superhero. We salute you, Shadrack!”

The rice forms part of food parcels that Feed Rural KZN is distributing to those in need in Mbazwana, KwaZulu-Natal.  Each parcel contains rice, Magogos Motoho, maize meal, samp, Danka spice, tinned tomatoes, long life milk, soap, cooking oil, beans, as well we Knorr beef and onion soups.

“Through this and other generous donations, we will be able to distribute 110 parcels covering almost 500 people for 3 weeks! We hope there will be more very soon!” said Khoury.

“We are proud to have played a role in facilitating much-needed food and relief amidst the Covid19 pandemic, “ said the RFA’s Chief Executive Gavin Kelly. “We thank Trucking Wellness for coming on board so quickly and so willingly. Once again, the road freight industry has shown that, as long as there are trucks on our roads, South Africa will not stop!”
