MULTIDISCIPLINARY TEAM IN EC HARD AT WORK TO REIN IN RISING CASES
Meanwhile, a multidisciplinary team in the Eastern Cape is at work to rein in rapidly rising COVID-19 infections.
There are more than 11,700 active cases in the province, 71% of which are in the Nelson Mandela Bay metro and Sarah Baartman District.
The Nelson Mandela Bay metro, Sarah Baartman District, Buffalo City metro and Chris Hani and Amathole Districts are all recording high rates of COVID-19 infection.
Head of Health in the Eastern Cape Sibongile Zungu said: “The Nelson Mandela Bay metro and Sarah Baartman are the two geographic areas that have pockets of a resurgence, that when they collate when you pull them all together they then give both Sarah Baartman and Nelson Mandela Bay the status of a resurgence.”
On Saturday, almost 6,000 active COVID-19 cases were recorded in Nelson Mandela Bay, while more than 2,300 were recorded in the Sarah Baartman District.
Zungu said they were identifying and containing hotspots: “We're really working on a geographic mapping of ensuring that we know where the cases are and then we trace the contacts of those cases and then we move them and ensure that we isolate the cases and quarantine the contacts.”
A team of 15 WHO environmental health officers have joined the province in its COVID-19 fight.
Additional members of the Cuban Medical Brigade have also been redeployed to the Eastern Cape.
